In this week’s episode, Drew Niermann – our Go-to-Market Leader – dives into the CapStorm story. While the company has offered our Salesforce data management solutions for 12 years, the CopyStorm technology dates back to the early 2000s. Our co-founder, Greg Smith, was working in the St. Louis area, where he was tasked with merging two Salesforce orgs into one following an acquisition. After looking online for solutions for his task, he realized there wasn’t one, and thus wrote his own program – which would eventually become CopyStorm. 

When the project finished, Greg put his program online as a free download, where it proved to be popular. After seeing how many users were downloading the program, Greg and his wife, Mary, decided to start a software company. And thus, CapStorm was born. With Mary at the helm as CEO and Greg expanding the technology and UI, CapStorm grew to become the Salesforce data management leader it is known as today. 

The goal of the Data Unleashed vlog series is to help Salesforce’s customers identify what they might be able to do by unleashing the unrealized potential within their data! Every solution in this vlog is geared towards solving the challenges you might face while giving your autonomous control over your Salesforce data outside of Salesforce.

My name is Drew Niermann, and you’re watching Data Unleashed, the video blog series dedicated to helping you get more out of your Salesforce data.

So we’re now on episode two of this series. And I wanted to give you a little bit of background on where I’m coming from as I share some of these stories and ideas about how to solve complex Salesforce problems.

I work as Go-to-Market Lead for a company called CapStorm. And we provide a self-hosted Salesforce data management platform to the Salesforce ecosystem. So everything that I talk about in this series is going to come from the idea of having autonomous control over your data to solve the most technically challenging problems in the Salesforce ecosystem. 

So, let me tell you a little bit about CapStorm and how I’m gleaning this knowledge from my customers every day. 

So CapStorm started in 2011. But the story that most people don’t know is that the software was created in the early 2000s. So in the early 2000s, our co-founder, Greg, was working at a pharmaceutical and biotech research company in the St. Louis, Missouri area; he was tasked with merging two Salesforce orgs into one after his company had acquired another company. 

He looked online to find tools to migrate data and metadata between the orgs but found that there was nothing there. And so he wrote what became CopyStorm. After the project was finished, he put it online as an open-source, free downloadable, and the download started flying off the site. And so, in short, he pulled the product down, went home to his wife, and said, “What do you think about starting a software company?” She obviously said yes. And here we are 12 years later, doing business with primarily enterprise clients in 48 different countries. 

So every solution that I talk about, as I said, is going to be from the angle of solving those challenges while having autonomous control over your Salesforce data outside of Salesforce.
