Hello, my name is Drew Niermann and you’re watching Data Unleashed, the video blog series dedicated to helping you get more out of your investment in Salesforce.

In recent years, something that we’ve heard quite a bit more about at CapStorm is having a digital chain of custody, or an immutable record transactional history of data as it’s changed or evolved over the lifecycle of its existence. 

One of the stories that we heard was about a Fortune 500 organization that, at any given point in time, has between three and 400 different lawsuits. That’s a lot, at least in my mind, it is. And one of the things that they were wanting to do was place tamper-evident holds on certain types of data that they have in their repositories. 

So imagine they’re in different lawsuits with different organizations. And let’s say it’s over intellectual property rights or something. The opposing attorney is requesting slices of data to make their case or maybe even to prove your innocence, your attorney is. How do you go about getting data that lives in Salesforce into the hands of a requesting judge to prove your innocence without sharing too much of that data? And if you share a sub-slice of that data for the opposing attorney and client to go through, how do you know that what you get back has not been tampered with? 

This is really, really important for no intellectual property, or patent infringement type of lawsuits. And there is a way that CapStorm offers to replicate this data down and give you an immutable digital chain of custody. 

The way this works is you pull down a copy of Salesforce, you use encryption algorithms to protect this data at rest and make sure that it has not been changed. Anytime records do change, you can see when it happened, who did it, what was the event, and circumstances under which occurred, giving you the ability to go back in time and figure out why or how that type of change was made.
